Ingredients
Chaga Mushroom (Dried):
– 1 tbsp chaga mushroom powder or 1 small chaga slice (about 1 inch thick)
Chai Base:
– 2 cups whole milk (or oat, almond, or soy milk)
– 1 cup water
– 1 tsp black tea leaves (or 1 tea bag)
– 1 tsp ground cinnamon
– 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
– 1/2 tsp ginger powder
– 1/2 tsp black pepper
– 1/4 tsp cloves
– 1/4 tsp nutmeg
– 1/2 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
Directions
- In a small pot, combine the chaga mushroom, water, and black tea leaves. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, allowing the chaga to infuse its flavor and color.
- Add the milk and remaining spices (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper, cloves, nutmeg). Stir well and continue to simmer for another 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and strain the mixture to remove the chaga and tea leaves.
- Pour into mugs and top with a drizzle of honey or maple syrup if desired. Serve warm.
Tips
- For a stronger chaga flavor, use more chaga or let the infusion steep longer.
- If using chaga slices, ensure they are fully submerged and allowed to steep for at least 10 minutes.
- Adjust the spices to taste, especially the black pepper, which enhances the absorption of chaga’s nutrients.
- Chaga can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen for longer use.
